Job Title – Factory & Logistics Manager

Reports to – Production Manager

Line Manager – Production Manager

Direct Reports: Door and Frame Supervisors / Area Leads, Paint team, Logistics and Stores team members

Other regular relationships – Production Admin, Operations team including Installation Manager & Supervisors

Minimum Requirements – Must have previous Factory Management experience in a manufacturing industry working with timber and associated machinery.

Role is expected to be split between the factory and the office environment with the split between the two areas guided by the shop floor capabilities at a any given time. Regular shop floor walks to facilitate where resource may need to be deployed.

The below responsibilities will be achieved by building an effective team on the shop floor with area leads / supervisors working below the Factory & Logistics Manager.

Shellen is actively developing software modules (Information Leader) that will assist / facilitate with some of these duties e.g. Goods In Management.

Summary of Core Responsibilities:

  • Production output: ensure the factory throughput is maintained to achieve daily output numbers, highlighting and /or removing obstacles that may impede the required output. Maintain reports to track the progress of batches through the manufacturing processes.
  • Logistics: manage the daily / weekly logistics to ensure on time deliveries in full to the sites where Shellen are fitting or have storage available. Where storage is available door sets to be delivered in bulk and highlight when storage is not available.
  • Work Scheduling / Programming: Ensure there is a day to day plan for the shop floor workload. Work with the Production Manager to provide appropriate weekly / monthly plans for the shop floor and Logistics. Provide availability updates for completion of internal works and projected availability of door sets to Operations to allow fitting appointments to be booked. Set internal targets/ deadlines on the shop floor to achieve projected door availability
  • Goods-In Management: receipt of goods to ensure orders are correct / complete, match proof of delivery with orders, highlight shortfalls / errors / damaged goods, and assist in returns of incorrect or faulty items.
  • Quality Control: Ensure the quality control checks required by the process are adhered to and the paperwork correctly completed, perform additional quality checks at intervals to check this process is working efficiently. Ensure quality control of incoming goods is completed in a timely manner e.g. density and moisture checks.
  • Stock Control: work with the Production Office and factory teams to ensure adequate stocks of raw materials, consumable items and door installation items are maintained.
  • Health & Safety: Ensure all work is carried out with the correct health & safety precautions in place with the factory maintained in a tidy organized state.
  • Training: Ensure all staff are trained and competent in the tasks they are performing and that training records are maintained to evidence this. Facilitate toolbox talks / single point lessons as necessary to facilitate introduction of new processes, improvement of existing processes or corrective actions to reduce or eliminate issues that have arisen.
  • Continuous Improvement: Support the business as required with ongoing continuous improvement activities in its processes and systems. Assist the Production Manager in reviewing and implementing shop floor guides for all Production processes. Evaluation of wastes within the factory with a view to control and reduce.
  • Recruitment: Work with the Production Manager and HR to recruit staff for the shop floor at the required levels of knowledge and experience. Maintain staffing levels and skills mix to deliver the Production Output requirements.
  • Production Equipment: Ensure all production equipment is adequately maintained through daily, weekly, monthly maintenance and regular servicing at periodic intervals. Facilitate repairs as required. Be involved in providing recommendations for new or additional machinery as required to achieve manufacturing targets.
  • Staff Reviews: Carry out 1 on 1 periodic reviews of Factory Operatives performance. Assist / carry out absence reviews / disciplinaries of factory operatives.
  • Management Meetings: Attend the weekly management meeting, providing progress and details of Production progress on active jobs, preparation for new projects etc. and for giving / receiving feedback of issues in the daily operations of the business.
  • Build Sheets / Survey Review: Assist the Production Manager in the generation & checking of build sheets and associated paperwork for the door sets and ensure an adequate supply to the factory to meet the required Production output per day / week. Review the survey sheets / photos upon receipt to highlight missing information or potential issues to the Operations team for resolution.
  • Additional Duties: To carry out any other additional, reasonable duties required to support Production and the wider business. For example on occasion there might be a requirement to attend site to clarify a survey issue.
